Should US Citizens Fly or Cross Overland into Cambodia in 2026?

The short answer: fly, unless your route says otherwise

If you are a US citizen deciding how to get into Cambodia in 2026, fly. It is faster, it is more certain, and your eVisa is accepted at every international airport with no guesswork about whether a particular lane will honor it. Overland still has its place, but it is a narrower place than it was even two years ago, and choosing it for the wrong reasons is how Americans end up stranded at a closed gate or talking to someone at a remote crossing who wants a cash "fee" that does not exist.

The single biggest reason the math has shifted is the Thailand border. Every one of the seven Thailand–Cambodia land crossings has been closed since June 2025, and the Thai side has shown no sign of reopening them. That wipes out the old backpacker classic — Bangkok by bus, walk across at Poipet, tuk-tuk to Siem Reap. If your plan started in Thailand, you are flying into Cambodia whether you wanted to or not. From Vietnam and Laos the land routes still work, but they are not automatically the smarter call.

This guide compares the two honestly — speed, certainty, cost, and the scam risk nobody puts in a brochure — then tells you which routes actually work in 2026 and when overland is worth it anyway. If your trip touches Thailand, start with our breakdown of the closed Thailand land borders and what to do instead, because that decision is already made for you. When you know how you are entering, you can apply for your eVisa in about ten minutes.

Why flying wins for most Americans in 2026

Flying into Cambodia is the path of least resistance, and for American travelers in 2026 that is not a small thing. The advantages are concrete, not vibes — they show up as hours saved and problems avoided.

• Speed. A direct flight from a regional hub puts you on the ground in an hour or two; the same trip overland from Vietnam or Laos is a half- or full-day bus ride plus a border stop.
• Certainty. Your eVisa is accepted at every Cambodian international airport, with dedicated eVisa lanes and staff who process them all day. There is no question of whether a particular gate honors the eVisa — they all do.
• Predictable hours. Airports run on flight schedules, not the variable opening times of a rural land checkpoint that can shut early or sit closed on a public holiday.
• Lower scam exposure. Airport immigration is controlled, observed, and consistent. You are far less likely to be hit with an invented "stamping fee" or a pushed-on currency exchange than at a remote land crossing.
• Cleaner arrival logistics. Metered or app-based taxis, currency, and SIM cards are all on site at the major airports, so you go from gate to city without improvising.

Phnom Penh adds a fresh reason to fly. The old PNH airport was retired on 9 September 2025 and replaced by Techo International (KTI), a larger, newer terminal with cleaner immigration flow and well-marked eVisa lanes. If you are arriving in the capital, our Techo airport arrival walkthrough takes you gate-to-taxi, and if you are still choosing a city, the guide on which Cambodian airport to fly into compares Techo against Siem Reap.

The land border reality: what still works, what does not

Overland into Cambodia is not gone — but it is smaller and more conditional than the internet still tells you. The headline is the Thailand closure, but the full picture matters if you are planning a multi-country trip.

Thailand: all seven borders closed

Every Thailand–Cambodia land crossing — Poipet, Cham Yeam, O Smach, and the rest of the seven — has been closed since June 2025. There is no walking across from Aranyaprathet, no bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap, no Hat Lek to Koh Kong run. If you are coming from Thailand, you fly. This is not a "check before you go" situation; it is a hard closure with no announced reopening, so build your itinerary around flying out of a Thai airport into a Cambodian one.

Vietnam and Laos: open, but selective on the eVisa

The land borders with Vietnam and Laos still operate. The busiest and most reliable is Bavet, on the main Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh route, which is well set up for eVisa holders. From Laos, the Trapeang Kreal crossing in the north handles overland travelers coming down from Si Phan Don. The catch is that not every land checkpoint accepts the eVisa — some only process visa-on-arrival or no foreign-issued visa at all — so you have to match your eVisa to a border that actually takes it before you commit to the route.

That matching step is where Americans get caught, so do not skip it. Our list of the Cambodia land borders that accept the eVisa names the exact crossings that will let you through on an eVisa, and the Bavet crossing guide for US citizens walks the Vietnam-to-Cambodia route end to end. Show up at the wrong border on an eVisa and you can be turned back to find a different crossing — an expensive mistake in time and taxi fare.

Fly vs land, head to head

Here is the comparison stripped to what actually changes your trip. The visa itself does not change — the same eVisa and the same fee apply whether you land at an airport or walk across a border — so the decision comes down to speed, reliability, and how much friction you are willing to absorb on arrival.

Read the table and the pattern is obvious: flying is faster and more certain on every row, and the one place land "wins" — fitting a Mekong overland leg you wanted to do anyway — is about your route, not about beating the airport. The cost row is the clincher for anyone hoping overland is the budget hack. It is not. The eVisa is $80 USD Tourist or $90 USD Business no matter how you enter, so crossing by land saves you nothing on the visa and usually costs you more in transit time and taxi shuffling.

The visa and e-Arrival are the same either way

One thing that confuses Americans planning an overland trip: they assume a land entry needs a different visa, or that the eVisa is somehow an "airport only" product. It is not. The same Cambodia eVisa covers both — $80 USD all-in for the Tourist eVisa, $90 USD all-in for the Business eVisa, approved in 3–5 days and delivered as a printable PDF by email. You print it, you carry it, and you present it whether you are at an airport immigration desk or a land checkpoint that accepts the eVisa.

The validity is the same too: 3 months from issue, with a 30-day single-entry stay. Note the single entry — if your plan is to enter Cambodia overland, hop into Vietnam, and come back, that second entry needs its own visa, because the standard eVisa does not let you re-enter on the same document. And remember the Tourist auto-extension ended in November 2025, so a tourist who wants more than 30 days now leaves and re-applies rather than extending in place.

The e-Arrival Card is where air and land genuinely differ, and it trips people up. Every air arrival must file it; land crossings handle the arrival declaration differently depending on the border. The card itself is the same form — 14 fields, $20 USD verified through us, submitted within 7 days before you travel — but how it is collected changes by entry point. Our breakdown of the e-Arrival Card for land border versus air arrivals explains exactly what each entry method expects, so you are not caught out filing the wrong thing.

When overland is genuinely the right call

None of this means flying is always the answer. There are real, sensible reasons to cross overland — they are just narrower than the budget-traveler folklore suggests. Overland makes sense when it is part of the trip you actually want, not a workaround.

• You are doing an Indochina loop. If your route is Saigon to Phnom Penh by road as a deliberate leg of a Vietnam–Cambodia trip, the Bavet crossing is a legitimate, scenic way to travel rather than a detour.
• You are coming down from Laos. Travelers finishing the 4,000 Islands and heading south to Cambodia often cross at Trapeang Kreal because flying that segment means backtracking to a hub first.
• You want the overland experience itself. A Mekong river-and-road journey is part of the appeal for some travelers, and that is a perfectly good reason — as long as you go in eyes open about the friction.
• There is no sensible flight. On a few specific regional legs, a land crossing is genuinely more direct than the available air connections, especially to or from secondary towns.

If you do go overland, go prepared. Cross at a border you have confirmed accepts the eVisa, carry small US dollar bills for legitimate transport, and politely refuse any "fast-track," "stamping," or "overtime" fee that is not on an official notice — those are the classic land-border shakedowns, and a calm "no thank you" almost always ends them. Arrive with daylight to spare so you are not negotiating onward transport after dark at a remote post.

1. 1
Confirm the border takes the eVisa

Only cross at a checkpoint you have verified accepts the eVisa, such as Bavet from Vietnam or Trapeang Kreal from Laos.

2. 2
   Apply and carry the eVisa

Get the $80 Tourist eVisa or $90 Business eVisa, approved in 3–5 days, and bring the printed PDF — it is the same document used at airports.

3. 3
   File the e-Arrival Card

Submit the 14-field e-Arrival Card ($20) within 7 days before you travel, and check how your specific land crossing collects it.

4. 4
   Pack small US dollar bills

Carry small-denomination US dollars for legitimate transport so you are not forced into a pushed-on currency exchange at the post.

5. 5
   Refuse invented fees

Politely decline any "fast-track," "stamping," or "overtime" charge that is not on an official notice — a calm refusal almost always ends it.

6. 6
   Cross in daylight

Arrive with daylight to spare so you are not negotiating onward transport after dark at a remote crossing.

Making the call for your 2026 trip

Put it all together and the decision is usually quick. Coming from Thailand? You fly — every land border is closed. Want speed and certainty with the least hassle? You fly. Doing a deliberate Mekong or Saigon-to-Phnom Penh leg from Vietnam or Laos? Overland is fair game, as long as you cross at a border that accepts the eVisa. Whatever you choose, the cost is identical, so let your route — not a myth about saving money — make the call. If Thailand is in your plans, the closed-borders guide spells out the fly-only reality in full.

The one reminder for either route: the visa is one step and the e-Arrival Card is a separate one, and both matter. Sort your eVisa now — it is the same $80 USD Tourist or $90 USD Business document whether you fly or cross by land — then handle the e-Arrival Card in the week before you travel. Americans who plan both up front are the ones who breeze through whichever entry point they pick.
