You have three realistic, safe options for the ride into the city, and all three share one feature: a known driver and a known price agreed before you move. That is the whole game at a late-night arrival. Pick one before you fly and you walk out of the doors with a plan instead of a negotiation. KTI is about 20 km south of central Phnom Penh, so whichever you choose, the ride is 40 minutes or more and the fare is higher than older guides quote for the old airport.

1. A pre-booked hotel pickup

For a midnight arrival, a hotel pickup is the calmest option there is. You email your hotel or guesthouse your flight number and arrival time a day or two ahead, and a driver waits inside the arrivals hall with your name on a sign. The price is fixed and known in advance, the driver knows exactly where you are going, and there is zero negotiating at the curb when you are barely awake. It usually costs a little more than a ride-hailing fare, and for a first night in an unfamiliar city in the dark, most American travelers find it well worth it.

2. Ride-hailing: Grab or PassApp

Grab and PassApp both work at KTI and run through the night. Once your SIM or eSIM is live, you open the app, set the pickup to the airport and the drop to your hotel, and the price is shown and locked before you confirm — no haggling, no meter surprises, and a digital record of the driver and car. The catch at a late-night arrival is that you need data first, so set up your eSIM before you fly or buy a SIM at the arrivals counter before you walk outside. KTI has a designated ride-hailing pickup zone; follow the app map and the signage to it rather than getting into a car that pulls up randomly.

3. The official airport taxi desk

It costs nothing, and a tired solo traveler heading into an unfamiliar city in the dark is exactly the moment a shared trip and a quick check-in message earn their keep.

The late-night traps tired Americans fall into

Almost nothing goes wrong at a Cambodian airport at night, but the things that do go wrong are predictable and easy to avoid once you know them. Every one of them comes down to making a transport decision while exhausted, in the dark, without a plan. Here are the traps, and the simple move that skips each one.

The first and most common is taking a ride from someone who approaches you. Anyone who walks up to you inside or just outside the terminal offering a taxi, a great deal, or a free ride is not the official taxi desk and is not your hotel driver. The move is to ignore the offer, walk to the official taxi desk or your app pickup zone, and use a ride with a known price. A driver with your name on a sign or a car you booked in an app is the only ride you should get into.

The second is getting in without agreeing the price. If you use the official desk or an app, the price is fixed for you. If for any reason you are negotiating directly with a driver — which you should not need to do — settle the full fare to your exact destination before you put a bag in the trunk, never after. "We sort it later" is how a tired traveler ends up arguing about money on a dark roadside, and it is entirely avoidable.

The third is underestimating the ride. KTI is about 20 km south of the city, so a 40-minute-plus drive in the dark is normal — that is the airport being far out, not your driver taking you the long way. Have your hotel address written down in English and, ideally, the Khmer name or a map pin saved offline, so you are not relying on a tired memory of how to pronounce it. A fourth trap is purely a travel-planning one: do not assume you can cross in from Thailand by land if your flight is awkward. All seven Thailand–Cambodia land borders have been closed since June 2025, so the overland route from Bangkok is not a fallback — flying into KTI is the way in.
