Pick whichever passport has the cleanest validity window — at least 6 months from arrival, at least two blank pages — and stay on it for the full trip. Australian + India

Common where a long-settled Indian-passport PR has naturalised as Australian but retains the Indian passport for visa-free family travel back to India. For Cambodia, the rules are again identical between the two — both passports are eligible for the eVisa at the same fee. The deciding factor is usually the onward leg: if you are flying Sydney → Phnom Penh → Delhi, use the Indian passport for the Cambodia eVisa to keep the entry-exit consistency lined up with the Indian visa-free entry on the next leg. If you are flying Sydney → Phnom Penh → Sydney, default to the Australian passport.

Australian + Vietnam

Common in Sydney and Melbourne's large Vietnamese-Australian community. The catch is that Vietnam and Cambodia are next door and lots of trips cover both. The rule still stands — pick one passport for Cambodia entry and stay on it for Cambodia exit. Most dual nationals use the Australian passport for Cambodia, then switch to the Vietnamese passport at the Vietnam border where it gives them visa-free entry. Never switch passports while inside Cambodia.

PR-specific edge cases (RRV, returning resident, stateless documents)

A handful of PR-specific scenarios come up often enough to need their own treatment. None of them change the basic passport rule — Cambodia still cares only about the passport you present — but each one has a wrinkle that catches people out.

Returning Resident Visa (RRV / subclass 155)

The RRV is the Australian-side visa that lets you return to Australia after extended time abroad. It is an Australian travel facility, granted by the Department of Home Affairs, and it sits in your passport as an electronic visa record. From Cambodia's side it does not exist — Cambodian Immigration cannot see your RRV, does not check for it, and does not factor it into the visa decision. You still apply for the Cambodia eVisa on your passport's nationality, you still pay the standard fee, and you still get the standard 3 business day approval. Make sure your RRV is valid for the return leg into Australia before you leave (your airline will check this on the Cambodia → Australia inbound), but for the Cambodia entry itself, the RRV is irrelevant.

Permanent Resident Card vs travel document

Australia does not issue a physical 'green card' the way the US does. Your Australian PR is a digital visa attached to your passport via your Department of Home Affairs Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) record. There is no card to show Cambodian Immigration — they would not look at it even if there was. Travel on your passport, with the passport open at the photo page, and have your VEVO confirmation accessible only for the Australian return leg.

Stateless travel documents and Convention Travel Documents

If you are an Australian PR holding a Convention Travel Document (CTD) or a Certificate of Identity issued by DFAT rather than a national passport — common for refugee-stream PRs — the eVisa portal cannot process the application. Stateless and CTD travellers must apply through the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Canberra, which handles the documentation case-by-case. Allow 3-4 weeks and call ahead before you book any flights; the embassy will tell you what additional supporting documents they need based on the specific travel document type.

Documents you still need on the day

The eVisa application is the same for every nationality, and the supporting documents are the same too. None of them are PR-specific, but the most-bumped Aussie PRs at the gate are the ones who assume their AU residency excuses them from the standard checks. It doesn't — every Cambodia traveller goes through the same gate, with the same documents.

• Passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining FROM the date of arrival in Cambodia — not from the application date. If your passport expires under 6 months from arrival, renew first through your country of citizenship's consulate in Australia before you apply.
• Two blank passport pages, side-by-side or facing, for the entry and exit stamps. The visa itself is electronic and does not need a page, but the stamps do.
• Recent passport-style photo, plain white background, face fully visible, taken within the last 6 months. JPEG or PNG, under 2MB, eVisa portal accepts most modern phone photos as long as the background is plain.
• Scan of the passport bio page in colour, clear and legible — the system reads the machine-readable zone (MRZ), so the bottom two lines of capital letters must be visible.
• Email address for the visa PDF delivery — use the email you check daily, not a work address that filters strangers.
