The 30 most stressful seconds of any Cambodia application is the moment the card comes back declined. The cause is almost always one of two things, both fixable in under five minutes once you know which line to call. Here is the bank-by-bank Aussie playbook.

Why is my Australian card being declined for the Cambodia eVisa?
Almost always one of two reasons: (1) your card isn't authorised for international online transactions — call your bank's 24/7 line to enable it (5-min fix at NAB, ANZ, CommBank, Westpac); or (2) the bank's fraud-flag system blocked the USD charge — respond to the SMS or email they just sent you, retry. The Cambodia eVisa accepts Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay. If retry still fails, switch to Apple Pay or Google Pay (often clears anti-fraud heuristics). No extra fee from us if you retry.

Two reasons cause 90% of Cambodia eVisa card declines for Australians — international online transactions disabled, or the bank's fraud-flag system blocked the USD charge.
Both fixes take under 5 minutes — call your bank's 24/7 line for reason 1, reply to the SMS or email for reason 2.
Apple Pay or Google Pay often clears the charge even after a raw card-number entry has been declined — different fraud signature on the bank's side.
PayPal and AmEx are both accepted as fallbacks. There is no extra fee from us when you retry after a decline.

Why was my Australian card declined for the Cambodia eVisa?
Almost always one of two reasons in roughly 90% of cases: (1) your card is not authorised for international online transactions — most new Aussie cards ship with this disabled and need a phone call to your bank to turn on, or (2) your bank's fraud-flag system blocked the foreign USD charge as a precaution and you should now have an SMS or email asking you to confirm. The other 10% covers insufficient balance (often a temporary USD authorisation hold), an expired card, or a billing-address mismatch. Reasons 1 and 2 both clear in under five minutes.
How do I authorise my CommBank card for international online?
Call CommBank on 13 22 21 and ask for the card services team — the line runs 24/7. Tell them you have had an international online transaction declined and need international purchases authorised on the card. They will verify your identity with a NetBank code or an app push, flip the setting while you are on the call, and confirm it is active. Retry the payment within 10 minutes from the same browser. There is no extra fee from us on the retry — the failed attempt was never charged.
Does NAB charge extra for Cambodia eVisa USD transactions?
NAB charges its standard 3% foreign-currency conversion fee on most credit products for any USD-denominated transaction, which works out to roughly $3.70 AUD on top of the $122 AUD equivalent for the Tourist eVisa. NAB does not levy any additional fee specifically for the Cambodia eVisa — it is the same 3% you would pay buying anything from a foreign online merchant. NAB debit cards on certain account types waive the FX fee; check your product disclosure statement.
Will Apple Pay work if my Visa was declined?
Often, yes. Apple Pay tokenises the transaction, so even though it draws on the same card and the same funds, the bank's fraud engine sees a different merchant signature that includes the tokenisation flag and the device authentication step. That signature consistently scores lower-risk than a raw card-number entry at a foreign checkout. If your card has been declined once, switching to Apple Pay on the retry clears the charge a high percentage of the time. Google Pay on Android works the same way for the same reason.
Can I use a Wise card for the Cambodia eVisa?
Yes, and it is one of the cleanest options for Aussie applicants. Wise debit cards have no FX fee and use the mid-market rate, which makes the USD charge convert at a noticeably better AUD figure than a standard credit card with a 3% surcharge. Wise is also built for foreign-merchant transactions by design, so the international-online filter that catches new Aussie cards from the big four is not an issue. Fund the account, type in the Wise card details at our checkout, charge clears straight through.

What if my bank's fraud SMS arrived but the retry still failed?
Two things to try. First, wait a full minute after confirming the SMS before retrying — some bank fraud systems take 30-60 seconds to propagate the confirmation across the network. Second, if the second retry also fails, call the bank's 24/7 line and ask them to manually clear the merchant and re-authorise international online purchases on the card. The phone team can override the fraud engine in a way the SMS confirm sometimes cannot. After that, switch to Apple Pay or Google Pay if you have the card in your Wallet — different fraud signature, same card, almost always clears.
Can I pay through PayPal if my card keeps declining?
Yes — PayPal is one of the six payment methods we accept and it is the cleanest fallback when card-level fraud signals keep blocking the charge. PayPal handles the merchant-side signature differently from a raw card-number entry, so the same underlying card that was declining via direct entry can often pay successfully through PayPal. The trade-off is PayPal's own FX margin on the USD-to-AUD conversion, which sits at around 3-4% — slightly higher than a typical card FX fee. An AUD-funded PayPal balance avoids the margin entirely if you have one pre-loaded.
Does the Cambodia eVisa accept AmEx?
Yes — American Express is one of the six accepted payment methods at our checkout, alongside Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Personal and corporate Aussie AmEx cards both work. The standard AmEx FX fee is 3% on most products, so the AUD figure on your statement will be the AUD-equivalent of the USD charge plus the 3% margin. Some corporate AmEx cards have a policy block on foreign merchants set by the issuing company — if that is your card, check with treasury before retrying, or switch to PayPal or a personal card.
