- Water. Two 1.5 L bottles minimum on the Phnom Penh → Stung Treng leg. The bus has air-conditioning but it dries you out, and the Kratie stop is short.
- A paperback book or a downloaded show. The phone signal drops out for long stretches north of Kratie. Treat the bus as your slow day.

Bring USD in small clean notes — the booth refuses anything torn, marked, or older than 2013. The Laos VoA at this land crossing is reliable and well-stocked, unlike the Cambodia VoA at Tropaeng Kreal going the other way.
Do I need a Cambodia eVisa or can I do VoA leaving overland?
You need a Cambodia eVisa or VoA to enter Cambodia, not to leave. If you flew into Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or Sihanoukville to start this trip, you would already have your Cambodia visa in your passport. The overland leg out to Laos only requires an exit stamp, which the Tropaeng Kreal booth applies free of charge once they check your existing entry stamp.
