How much USD cash to bring with you

Because Cambodia takes US dollars directly, the smartest move is to arrive with a sensible amount of clean USD already in your wallet and skip the airport exchange booths entirely. The right number depends on your trip, but for a typical first arrival, $200 to $400 in cash comfortably covers the SIM card, the ride into Phnom Penh, your first meals, and a buffer before you find a bank ATM in the city with friendlier fees.

Bring small bills, and bring them clean

The denomination mix matters more than the total. Arrive with a stack of $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills rather than a few crisp hundreds. A tuk-tuk driver, a SIM-card counter, or a market vendor cannot break a $100 bill, and trying to pay a $3 fare with one is the fastest way to start your trip on the back foot. Pull $200 in singles, fives, and tens from your US bank before you fly and you sidestep the problem entirely.

Condition is the part Americans rarely expect. Cambodian businesses and banks are genuinely fussy about US bills. A note that is torn, taped, heavily creased, written on, or stamped will often be refused outright, and older series notes — particularly anything printed before 2013, and the small-portrait designs — are frequently turned away. Ask your bank for newer, undamaged bills, and inspect them before you pack. A rejected $20 in your wallet is dead weight until you get home.

There is no Cambodian rule requiring you to declare ordinary travel cash on arrival, but there is a threshold worth knowing: amounts of $10,000 USD or more (or the equivalent) must be declared. Almost no leisure traveler hits that, and an officer is far more likely to ask about onward travel and proof of funds than to count your wallet — our guide to onward ticket and proof of funds at Cambodian Immigration covers what they actually check. For everyday trip money, you are well below the declaration threshold and can walk through with nothing to fill out.

Using the ATMs at Techo International Airport

If you would rather not carry much cash from home, the ATMs in the KTI arrivals hall are a reliable backup. They sit in the public area past customs, alongside the SIM counters and transport desks, and most of them dispense both US dollars and Cambodian riel — you pick which currency at the screen. For an American, choosing US dollars is almost always the right call, since that is what you will spend.

Expect a flat fee per withdrawal

Here is the catch every American should plan around: Cambodian ATMs charge a flat operator fee on top of whatever your US bank adds. It is commonly in the $4 to $6 range per withdrawal, and it does not scale with the amount you take out — so the fee stings far more on a $40 withdrawal than on a $300 one. The practical move is simple: withdraw a larger amount in a single transaction rather than several small top-ups. One $300 withdrawal with a $5 fee costs you the fee once; six $50 withdrawals cost you that fee six times over.

The other fee is your own bank. Many US debit and credit cards add a foreign-transaction fee and sometimes an international ATM fee, which stack on top of the Cambodian operator fee. If you travel often, a card with no foreign-transaction fees pays for itself fast — our roundup of the best no-foreign-transaction-fee cards for Cambodia covers which ones American travelers actually use. Bring at least two cards from different networks (one Visa, one Mastercard) in case one is not accepted at a given machine.

When you take dollars from a Cambodian ATM, you usually get clean, modern bills — the machines are stocked with notes that meet the local acceptance standard, which neatly solves the bill-condition problem. The main downside is denomination: airport ATMs often dispense $50 and $100 notes, so plan to break one early at the SIM counter or with the airport taxi desk, both of which can handle larger bills, before you are out in the city trying to pay a tuk-tuk.

Currency exchange booths and the "charge in USD" trap

The currency-exchange booths in the arrivals hall are the part of the airport money setup to be most wary of. Airport exchange counters anywhere in the world give poor rates, and Cambodia is no exception. For an American the calculus is even simpler: you already hold US dollars, the currency the entire country accepts, so there is almost no reason to exchange anything at the airport at all. Walk past the booths.

You do not need riel up front

Plenty of arriving travelers feel they should grab some local currency for safety, the way they would in most countries. Cambodia is the exception. Riel arrives in your pocket automatically as change from dollar payments, so there is no need to buy it. If you genuinely want a small amount for a market or a rural stretch, you will accumulate it naturally within a day of spending dollars — and if you ever want a better rate than the airport offers, a licensed exchange or a gold shop in the city center will beat the airport booth handily.

Always choose the local currency

This is the single most expensive mistake Americans make, and it shows up at the ATM screen and at card terminals alike. When a machine asks whether you want to be charged in US dollars or in the local currency, always pick the local currency. The "charge in USD" option is dynamic currency conversion, and it bakes in a markup that is consistently worse than the rate your own bank would apply. It feels reassuring to see a dollar figure, but you pay for that comfort every time — the same logic behind avoiding foreign-transaction fees on your Cambodia eVisa payment applies here too.

Putting your cash to work on the way into Phnom Penh

Once you have your dollars sorted — whether you brought them or pulled them from an ATM — the arrivals hall is where you spend the first of them. Two purchases happen here before you leave the building, and both are smoother when you already have small bills ready: your SIM card and your ride into the city.

SIM card first

The telecom counters in the hall sell tourist SIMs with generous data for a few US dollars, and the staff set it up on the spot — bring your passport, since SIMs are registered to it. Pay in small dollar bills if you can; the counters can usually break a larger note, which makes them a handy first stop to turn a $50 from the ATM into usable change. Get connected before you walk out so your ride-hailing app works the moment you reach the curb.

Then the ride. KTI sits about 20 km south of central Phnom Penh, so the fare is higher and the trip longer than the old airport — budget more dollars than older guides quote. The official taxi desk takes fixed fares in cash, a ride-hailing app like Grab or PassApp works once your SIM is live, and many hotels offer a pre-arranged pickup. Have small dollar bills ready for whichever you choose. Our Techo airport to Phnom Penh transport and cost guide breaks down each option and what to actually budget.

One last habit worth forming on day one: keep your large bills and your everyday small bills separate. A slim fold of $1s, $5s, and $10s in an easy pocket handles tuk-tuks, tips, water, and snacks without flashing a fat roll of hundreds every time you pay. The bigger notes stay tucked away for the hotel bill or the next ATM top-up. It is a small thing that makes the whole cash-based rhythm of Cambodia feel effortless rather than fiddly.

And if you have not yet locked in the documents that get you through Immigration in the first place, do that before you start thinking about money at all. The eVisa is your permission to enter and the e-Arrival Card is your arrival declaration — both are sorted before you fly. Our Techo International Airport arrival walkthrough takes you gate to taxi in the exact order you hit each step, money included.
