Cambodia e-Arrival Card vs Cambodia eVisa: What’s the Difference, and Do You Need Both?

Two documents, two jobs

Because both are online, both are Cambodian and both start with an “e”, the e-Arrival Card and the eVisa are easy to mix up. Travellers regularly assume that one covers the other: that an approved eVisa means the arrival paperwork is done, or that filing the e-Arrival Card is the same as getting a visa. Neither is true, and mixing them up is one of the few ways to arrive in Cambodia missing something you need.

The simplest way to hold the difference in your head is this. The eVisa answers the question “Are you allowed in?” The e-Arrival Card answers the question “Who is arriving, and how?” Immigration asks both questions, so most travellers need both answers.

e-Arrival Card vs eVisa, side by side

The row that matters most is the first one. The eVisa gives you a right; the e-Arrival Card records information. That is why having one never excuses you from the other.

Do you need both?

Cambodia’s own guidance is explicit on the key point: all travellers must complete the e-Arrival, even if they have already been granted a visa. So the e-Arrival Card is a given for anyone flying in. Whether you also need the eVisa depends on your passport.

If you are not sure which group your passport falls into, the eligibility checker will tell you in a few seconds whether you need a visa for Cambodia.

Visa-exempt travellers often assume they are exempt from the arrival card too. They are not, and our guide to the e-Arrival Card for visa-exempt travellers explains why.

Which should you do first?

The visa, every time. The eVisa takes 3 to 5 days to approve and you want it in hand well before you fly, because airlines can ask to see it at check-in. The e-Arrival Card cannot be filed until you are within 7 days of arrival, so it is naturally the last thing you do.

1. 1
Weeks before: apply for the eVisa

Apply once your trip is booked. Approval takes 3–5 days and the visa arrives by email.

2. 2
When approved: check it against your passport

Make sure the name, passport number and date of birth on the visa match your passport exactly.

3. 3
7 days out: the e-Arrival window opens

From 7 days before your arrival date, the e-Arrival Card can be submitted.

4. 4
2–4 days out: file the e-Arrival Card

File once your flights have stopped changing, using the same passport the visa was issued on.

5. 5
   Travel day: carry both

Keep your passport, your visa and your e-Arrival QR code together, saved offline and ideally printed.

If you still need the visa, you can apply for the Cambodia eVisa online: Tourist $80 USD or Business $90 USD, approved in 3–5 days and delivered by email.

Where the two documents have to agree

The eVisa and the e-Arrival Card are separate, but on arrival they are read together, alongside your passport. That means they have to tell the same story. The most important overlap is the passport itself: your visa was issued against a specific passport number, and your e-Arrival Card must be filed on that same passport.

• Same passport: if you renew your passport after getting your visa, sort out the visa before you file the e-Arrival Card on the new passport.
• Same name: spelled identically on the visa, the e-Arrival Card and the passport, including every given name.
• Consistent dates: your arrival date on the e-Arrival Card should fall within your visa’s validity period.
• Consistent purpose: a business trip on a tourist visa can raise questions, whatever your e-Arrival Card says.

Four common confusions, cleared up

“My eVisa came with a QR code, so I have done the e-Arrival.”

No. Your eVisa document may carry its own code, but it is not the e-Arrival Card. The e-Arrival Card is a separate submission with a separate QR code, filed within 7 days of arrival.

“I will get a visa on arrival, so I will do the arrival card at the airport too.”

The visa on arrival is handled at the airport, but the e-Arrival Card is designed to be filed before you fly. Filing it in advance means one less thing to do in the arrivals hall.

“The e-Arrival Card is a kind of visa for short trips.”

It is not a visa of any kind. Cambodia states plainly that the e-Arrival is not a visa. It gives you no permission to enter; it records your arrival.

“One e-Arrival Card covers my whole family.”

Each traveller files their own card, children included, just as each traveller who needs a visa needs their own visa. Our guide to the e-Arrival Card for families covers filing for a group.

Getting both sorted

Think of the two as bookends. The eVisa is the first thing you do after booking your flights; the e-Arrival Card is the last thing you do before you leave home. Do the visa early, file the card inside the 7-day window, keep both matched to the same passport, and your arrival in Cambodia should be the quickest part of the journey.

We handle both. We file the Cambodia arrival card for you, checked against your passport, with your QR code delivered by email: $20 Standard within 24 hours, $35 Rush within 2 hours, or $60 Super Rush within 15 minutes, per traveller.
