Did this guide help you?

For the overwhelming majority of US citizens reading this, the answer is EB — and it is not close. The way Americans typically use long stays in Cambodia maps almost entirely onto the EB profile, not the EG one. Here is the working breakdown we use with US travelers.
Notice that only the very last line is EG. That is the pattern in real life: EG fits one specific situation — landing in Cambodia to look for a local job you do not yet have — and almost everything else is EB. If your income comes from outside Cambodia, if you have an assignment, if you run a business, or if you are simply staying long-term without working, you are an EB traveler.
The reason this matters financially is straightforward. EB lets you take a single 6 or 12-month extension and be done. EG forces you into shorter, repeated renewals, and short renewals carry the highest per-month rate. Choosing EG when your situation actually qualifies for EB means paying more, visiting the agent more often, and losing the multi-entry flexibility — all for a path that was meant for job-seekers, not for you.

Neither EB nor EG is something you arrange from the United States. Both are lodged inside Cambodia, after you arrive, through a Cambodian immigration agent — not directly at a government counter. You enter on the Business eVisa (Type-E) with its 30-day stay, then, before that stay expires, you hand your passport to an agent in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. The agent files the extension paperwork, marks it as EB or EG based on your situation, and returns your stamped passport a week or two later.

Arrive and start the 30-day single-entry stay; submit the separate $20 USD e-Arrival Card, 14 fields, within 7 days before your flight.
EB if you have a job, business, or work permit; EG only if you arrived to job-hunt with no employer yet.
At least 2 weeks before the 30-day stay expires, give your passport to a Cambodian immigration agent in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.
The agent lodges the paperwork as EB or EG; for EB, bring proof of business standing such as an employment arrangement or work permit.
Processing runs 7 to 14 days; collect your stamped passport and avoid overstay, which costs $10 USD per day from day one.
For an EB extension, the agent will generally want to see something that supports your business standing — an employment arrangement, a company connection, or a work permit (or the work-permit application in progress). For EG, the threshold is lower because the whole point is that you do not have an employer yet, but the trade-off is the shorter length and the bridge-only nature of the stay.
Timing is the part Americans most often get wrong. Start the extension paperwork at least 2 weeks before your initial 30-day stay expires. Agent processing is typically 7 to 14 days, and cutting it close risks an overstay. The Cambodian overstay penalty is $10 USD per day from day one, paid in cash at the airport on exit, and a long overstay can affect future visa applications — so the planning buffer is not optional.
One more piece that confuses US travelers: the EB extension and the Cambodian work permit are two separate documents, even though they travel together for long-stay workers. The EB extension is your right to remain; the work permit is your right to work. The two-documents guide on the work permit vs the EB visa explains how they fit together and which order to obtain them in.

A handful of avoidable errors send Americans down the wrong extension path or into a needless overstay. These are the ones the desk sees most often.
The edge case that comes up most for Americans is the person who arrives intending to job-hunt, takes EG as a bridge, and then lands a role. The clean move is to convert to EB once you have an employer and a work-permit sponsor — at which point the long 6 or 12-month extensions and multi-entry open up. EG was never meant to carry a multi-year stay; EB is the document that does.
If you are still weighing whether to enter on the Tourist or the Business eVisa in the first place — which is the decision that actually determines whether EB and EG are even available to you — the guide to which Cambodia visa to enter on for a long stay is the one to read before you book.

लाओस मार्ग की योजना बनाएं →The whole EB-versus-EG decision collapses into one question: do you have business standing in Cambodia, or are you arriving to look for it? If you have a job, an assignment, a business, income from outside Cambodia, or you are simply staying long-term without working, you are an EB traveler — take the long 6 or 12-month extension and run a clean stay. If you are landing specifically to job-hunt with nothing lined up, EG is your short bridge until you convert. That is the entire fork.
Everything upstream of that fork is the same for both: you enter on the Business eVisa (Type-E), $90 USD all-in, approved in 3–5 days and delivered as a printable PDF by email, with free resubmission if Immigration flags a correction and US-timezone support if anything snags. Open airports for US arrivals are KTI (Phnom Penh — the new Techo International Airport that replaced the old PNH on 9 September 2025), SAI (Siem Reap-Angkor), and KOS (Sihanoukville). Land entry is realistic only from Vietnam at Bavet or from Laos at Tropaeng Kreal — all seven Thailand-Cambodia land borders have been closed since June 2025, so a Bangkok-overland plan does not work in 2026.
US Embassy in Phnom Penh
