Cash, connection, and the five-minute setup before you walk out

Whatever ride you choose, two things make a late-night arrival smooth: a working phone and the right cash. Both take five minutes in the arrivals hall, and both are far easier to sort inside under the lights than outside in the dark with a driver waiting. Resist the urge to bolt straight for the exit because you are tired — the five minutes you spend here saves you the headache outside.

Carry small US dollar bills

Cambodia runs on US dollars day to day, which makes life easy for American travelers — but only if your bills are the right size. A driver at 1 a.m. is not going to have change for a $100 bill, and handing over a fifty for a twenty-something-dollar fare is asking to be told there is no change. Before you fly, break a couple hundred dollars into fives, tens, and twenties. Bring clean, undamaged notes too, because torn or heavily marked bills are sometimes refused. The airport ATMs dispense both US dollars and Cambodian riel, with riel used mainly for change under a dollar.

Get connected before you leave the building

You need data to run Grab or PassApp, message your hotel, or pull up a map, so get connected before you walk outside. The telecom counters in the arrivals hall sell tourist SIMs with plenty of data for a few US dollars and set them up on the spot — bring your passport, since SIMs are registered to it. One small thing that matters more at night: tell someone your plan. Drop your hotel a message that you have landed and are on your way, or share your ride in the Grab app with someone back home. It costs nothing, and a tired solo traveler heading into an unfamiliar city in the dark is exactly the moment a shared trip and a quick check-in message earn their keep.

The late-night traps tired Americans fall into

Almost nothing goes wrong at a Cambodian airport at night, but the things that do go wrong are predictable and easy to avoid once you know them. Every one of them comes down to making a transport decision while exhausted, in the dark, without a plan. Here are the traps, and the simple move that skips each one.

The first and most common is taking a ride from someone who approaches you. Anyone who walks up to you inside or just outside the terminal offering a taxi, a great deal, or a free ride is not the official taxi desk and is not your hotel driver. The move is to ignore the offer, walk to the official taxi desk or your app pickup zone, and use a ride with a known price. A driver with your name on a sign or a car you booked in an app is the only ride you should get into.

The second is getting in without agreeing the price. If you use the official desk or an app, the price is fixed for you. If for any reason you are negotiating directly with a driver — which you should not need to do — settle the full fare to your exact destination before you put a bag in the trunk, never after. "We sort it later" is how a tired traveler ends up arguing about money on a dark roadside, and it is entirely avoidable.

The third is underestimating the ride. KTI is about 20 km south of the city, so a 40-minute-plus drive in the dark is normal — that is the airport being far out, not your driver taking you the long way. Have your hotel address written down in English and, ideally, the Khmer name or a map pin saved offline, so you are not relying on a tired memory of how to pronounce it. A fourth trap is purely a travel-planning one: do not assume you can cross in from Thailand by land if your flight is awkward. All seven Thailand–Cambodia land borders have been closed since June 2025, so the overland route from Bangkok is not a fallback — flying into KTI is the way in.
