Why a modern phone photo is three to eight megabytes

Worth knowing before you start: shrinking the file is not the same as lowering the resolution below the floor. You can take an 8 MB, 4000-pixel photo down to a clean 800 KB, 800-pixel square that is still well above the 600-pixel minimum. The two numbers move independently, which is exactly why the crop-first method works so well. The fix: crop, then resize, then compress — in that order

• Crop to a square first. A portrait photo is mostly background above your head and below your shoulders. Cropping it to a square (1:1) with your head centered, a little headroom above, and your shoulders showing deletes pixels you do not need — and because you are removing background rather than compressing your face, there is zero quality loss in what remains. For most American phone photos, the square crop alone drops the file under 2 MB.
• Resize the short side to around 600 to 1000 pixels. If the cropped square is still over the limit, scale it down. A square photo at roughly 600 to 1000 pixels per side is comfortably above the 600-pixel resolution floor and almost always well under 2 MB. This is the single most effective lever, because halving the pixel dimensions cuts the file to roughly a quarter of its size.
• Re-save as a JPEG at 80-90% quality. Only if it is still too big. JPEG is a lossy format, so exporting at 80-90% quality cuts the file meaningfully while staying visually clean. Avoid dropping below about 70%, where compression artifacts — blocky edges, smeared skin — start to show on the face and the validator can read the image as degraded.

A note on the title of this guide: you do not actually have to hit "under 1 MB." Plenty of compression tools and advice circles around the 1 MB mark as a safe round number, and it is — a sub-1 MB square JPEG sails through. But the real Cambodia eVisa ceiling is 2 MB, so you have more room than the popular 1 MB target suggests. Aim for under 1 MB if it makes you feel safer; you only need to clear 2 MB.
