Việc bay có đắt hơn tuyến xe buýt cũ không?

Less than you would think. Once you price the old overland day — the bus, the transfers, and a full day of travel — against a one-hour flight, the gap is small, and the land route is closed anyway. Read the budget fares carefully, though: low-cost carriers price cabin and checked bags separately, so a cheap-looking ticket can land above a full-service fare once you add a bag and a seat.

My trip is Bangkok, then Cambodia, then back to Thailand — what do I need?

You fly each leg, because the land borders are closed. Watch the single-entry trap on the eVisa: the standard tourist eVisa is single entry, so if you leave Cambodia and re-enter, that second entry needs its own visa coverage. Map your route before you book, and remember the e-Arrival Card is filed fresh for each air arrival into Cambodia.

How do Americans get from Bangkok to Phnom Penh now that the land border is closed?

You fly. All seven Thailand-Cambodia land borders have been closed since June 2025, so the old overland bus and minivan routes from Bangkok to Phnom Penh are not available in 2026. The replacement is a direct flight of roughly one hour, with multiple daily departures from Bangkok to Techo International Airport (KTI), the new field that replaced the old Phnom Penh airport (PNH) on 9 September 2025. Before you go you need an approved Cambodia eVisa, which arrives as a printable PDF by email in 3–5 days, and you file the e-Arrival Card within the 7 days before you land. Fly, sort the eVisa and the e-Arrival Card in advance, and the Bangkok-to-Phnom-Penh leg becomes one of the easiest parts of the trip.

Những điểm chính cần ghi nhớ

All seven Thailand-Cambodia land borders have been closed since June 2025, so the old overland bus from Bangkok to Phnom Penh is not an option in 2026 — you fly.
The flight is short: roughly one hour gate to gate, with multiple daily departures from Bangkok (BKK and DMK) to Techo International (KTI) near Phnom Penh.
KTI replaced the old Phnom Penh airport (PNH) on 9 September 2025, so book and check your arrival airport as Techo International, not the retired field.
Your Cambodia eVisa is required whether you ever planned to come by land or not — approved in 3–5 days and delivered as a printable PDF by email.
Every air arrival also files the e-Arrival Card within the 7 days before landing — file a verified card for $20 USD, checked end-to-end before it reaches Cambodian Immigration.

Why the bus is gone and the flight is the answer in 2026

If you are planning a Bangkok-then-Cambodia trip and you remember the cheap overland run between the two capitals, set that memory aside. All seven Thailand-Cambodia land borders have been closed since June 2025, and they stayed shut through 2026. The bus, the minivan, the train-then-tuk-tuk hop across at Poipet — none of it is on the table right now. For Americans the clean answer is the one nobody minds taking once they see the numbers: a flight of about an hour from Bangkok to Phnom Penh.

This is less of a downgrade than it sounds. The overland Bangkok-to-Phnom-Penh trip was never the breezy budget legend it is remembered as — it was a long day of bus transfers, a notoriously slow border post, and the scam-heavy stretch around Poipet that every guidebook warned about. Swapping all of that for a short hop into a brand-new airport is, frankly, the upgrade most travelers would have chosen anyway. The only thing you lose is the bragging rights of the overland crossing.

This guide covers the flight route end to end: the airports, the carriers, the timing, and exactly what Americans need to land clean at Techo International. If your trip ends in Siem Reap rather than Phnom Penh, the logic is the same and our guide to flying Bangkok to Siem Reap instead of the land border walks that version. And if you want the full picture of why the borders shut and what it means for your itinerary, the explainer on the Thailand-Cambodia land borders being closed lays it all out.

The Bangkok to Phnom Penh flight: one hour, two airports

The route is short and well served. Phnom Penh sits roughly 530 kilometers from Bangkok, which translates to a scheduled flight time of about an hour gate to gate — less time in the air than the taxi ride to the airport on either end. Multiple carriers fly it daily, so you are choosing a departure time, not hunting for a seat.

Bangkok has two airports, and it matters which one your flight leaves from. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the big international hub southeast of the city; Don Mueang (DMK) is the older airport to the north that the low-cost carriers favor. Full-service flights to Phnom Penh tend to run out of BKK, while budget fares often depart DMK. If you are connecting from a long-haul flight into BKK, double-check whether your onward Cambodia leg leaves from the same airport — a same-day BKK-to-DMK transfer is a real cross-city slog in Bangkok traffic, and you want to know about it before you book, not after.

On the Cambodia side you land at Techo International (KTI), the new airport that opened southeast of Phnom Penh and replaced the old in-city field. The flight crosses one time zone in name only — Thailand and Cambodia run the same clock, so the local arrival time is simply your departure time plus the flight. No mental math, no jet lag on this leg, and no overnight bus to recover from.

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Can I still travel overland from Bangkok to Phnom Penh in 2026?

No. All seven Thailand-Cambodia land borders have been closed since June 2025, so the old overland bus and minivan routes from Bangkok to Phnom Penh are not running. The replacement is a direct flight of roughly one hour, with multiple daily departures from Bangkok to Techo International (KTI). If Thailand is part of your trip, you fly between the two countries.

How long is the flight from Bangkok to Phnom Penh?

About one hour gate to gate — Phnom Penh sits roughly 530 kilometers from Bangkok. Thailand and Cambodia share the same time zone, so your local arrival time is simply your departure time plus the flight. There is no jet lag on this leg and no overnight bus to recover from.

Which Bangkok airport do flights to Phnom Penh leave from?

Both. Full-service flights tend to run out of Suvarnabhumi (BKK), while low-cost carriers often depart Don Mueang (DMK). The two airports are on opposite sides of Bangkok, so if you are connecting from a long-haul flight, confirm whether your Cambodia leg leaves from the same airport — a same-day BKK-to-DMK transfer is a real cross-city trip in Bangkok traffic.

What airport do I land at in Phnom Penh?

Techo International (KTI), which replaced the old Phnom Penh airport (PNH) on 9 September 2025. KTI is the larger new field built farther southeast of the city center. If your last trip predates September 2025, the airport is genuinely different — different building, longer transfer into town, and arrival advice written for the old PNH no longer applies.

Do I still need a Cambodia eVisa if I fly instead of crossing by land?

Yes. The eVisa is your permission to enter Cambodia, and the entry mode does not change that. As a US citizen you apply online, it is approved in 3–5 days, and it arrives as a printable PDF by email. It is valid for 3 months from issue, allows a 30-day stay, and is single entry. Lock it in before you book non-refundable flights.

Do I have to file the e-Arrival Card for a flight into Phnom Penh?

Yes, with no exceptions. Every air arrival into Cambodia files the e-Arrival Card — 14 fields across three sections, submitted within the 7 days before you land. It is separate from your eVisa and does not replace it. The most common reason a US-filed card gets flagged is the date format, since the form uses a day-month-year layout in places and US travelers default to month-day-year.

Choosing your flight: airports, timing, and the booking traps

A handful of carriers run the Bangkok to Phnom Penh route, mixing full-service and low-cost options across BKK and DMK. Fares move with season and demand, but this is a short regional hop, not a long-haul fare — the cost difference between the flight and the old overland day is far smaller than travelers expect once you price the bus, the transfers, and a wasted day against a one-hour flight.

Watch the airport question first. Book a budget fare without checking and you may find your "Bangkok" departure is actually Don Mueang while your incoming long-haul lands at Suvarnabhumi, or the reverse. The two airports are on opposite sides of a city famous for its traffic, and bridging them on a tight connection is the most common self-inflicted headache on this route. Give yourself real buffer if you are connecting, and prefer same-airport itineraries when the price is close.

Watch the baggage rules second. Low-cost carriers price cabin and checked bags separately, and a fare that looks cheaper at first glance can land above a full-service ticket once you add a checked bag and a seat. Read what is included before you commit. And confirm your arrival airport reads as Techo International (KTI), not the retired Phnom Penh field — older booking tools and stale travel content still occasionally surface the wrong airport, and you want the right one printed on your itinerary.

One thing the flight does not change: you still need a Cambodia eVisa to enter, and it is the same approval whether you arrive by air or ever planned to come by land. As a US citizen you apply online ahead of time, it is approved in 3–5 days, and it arrives as a printable PDF by email. Lock that in before you book non-refundable flights, not after. Our complete guide to the Cambodia visa for US citizens walks the whole approval side end to end.

Before you fly: the eVisa and e-Arrival Card every air arrival needs

Two paperwork steps stand between booking a flight and walking out of KTI, and both are done before you leave home. The first is the Cambodia eVisa — your permission to enter the country. The second is the e-Arrival Card — the digital arrival declaration that replaced the paper card a flight attendant used to hand out on descent. They are separate things, both mandatory for any air arrival, and travelers who plan for one but forget the other are the ones working it out at the gate.

The eVisa comes first because it has the longer lead time. As a US citizen you apply online, it is approved in 3–5 days, and it lands as a printable PDF by email. It is valid for 3 months from issue, lets you stay 30 days, and is single entry — so if your trip loops back out of Cambodia and in again, that second entry needs its own visa coverage. Lock the eVisa in before non-refundable flights, give the 3-business-day clock room, and you remove the only real time pressure on this trip.

The e-Arrival Card is the step travelers underestimate. It is 14 fields across three sections, and you file it within the 7 days before you land — the system is tied to your specific flight and will not take it earlier. The trap that catches Americans is the date format: the form uses a day-month-year layout in places, and a US traveler defaulting to month-day-year can put their arrival date a month off. That is the single most common reason a US-filed card gets flagged at the kiosk. When you file a verified e-Arrival Card with us for $20 USD, it is checked end-to-end before it reaches Cambodian Immigration — name against passport, flight number against your final leg, and that date format. Our e-Arrival walkthrough for the port of entry shows exactly how the KTI field is entered.

Sequence it like this and the trip runs itself: book the flight once the airports and baggage check out, apply for the eVisa right away so the 3-business-day window is well clear of departure, then file the e-Arrival Card in the week before you fly when your flight details are locked. Three steps, none of them urgent if you start early, and you land at KTI with nothing left to figure out.
