KTI tends to bunch up in two windows. The first is late evening, when long-haul flights from the Gulf, Europe, and East Asia time their arrivals into Phnom Penh after a full day of flying. The second is early morning, when overnight flights and the first regional connections of the day land close together. Those are the windows where you are most likely to walk into a queue several hundred deep. The quieter slots are mid-morning and early afternoon, when arrivals are spaced out and the desks are keeping pace easily.

You do not always get to pick — flights from the US almost always route through a hub in the Gulf or East Asia, and the final leg into KTI lands when it lands. But when you are choosing between two connections that get you there the same day, the one that arrives mid-morning over the one that arrives at 11 p.m. can be the difference between a 15-minute clearance and a 45-minute one. You cannot control how many flights land with yours, but you can guarantee you are never the person holding up the queue. Almost every avoidable delay at KTI comes down to documents that were not ready when they needed to be. Three things in order, and you are in the fast half every time.

   Clear the Immigration desk

   Hand over your US passport and eVisa PDF, answer one or two short questions, get photographed, and get stamped for a 30-day single-entry stay.

First, sort the eVisa before you fly. Second, file the e-Arrival Card and save the QR offline. This is the form whose QR code is scanned at the very first checkpoint, before you even reach Immigration. The most common reason an American gets pulled out of the queue is a missing or mis-dated e-Arrival Card — usually a date-format slip, because the form reads day-month-year in places and an American entering 06/07 expecting July 6th gets June 7th. Third, know what the desk will ask so you answer without hesitating. The questions are short and routine — where you are staying, how long, and the purpose of your visit — but a traveler who has to think about the answer slows the desk down. One more practical note for tight schedules: do not plan a short connection or a hard hotel-transfer deadline around the fastest-case 15 minutes. On a bad day the queue is genuinely 45 minutes plus baggage, and a missed onward flight or a transfer driver who gave up waiting costs far more than the buffer would have.
