Can I just take a private car all the way through?

Yes, and for tight-schedule consulting trips it is often worth the extra cost. A Phnom Penh-Saigon door-to-door private car runs around $180 USD (~$275 AUD) and clears the corridor in 5.5 to 6 hours rather than the 6.5 to 7 of the sleeper bus. The Cambodian Immigration officer at Bavet sees private cars constantly and the booth experience is faster — 15 minutes per side rather than 45. The trade-off is that you queue yourself rather than benefiting from the bus crew's passport-runner service.

What if my Vietnam eVisa is single-entry and I need to re-enter Vietnam too?

Then you need a fresh Vietnam application as well, which is $25 USD (~$38 AUD) and processed in 3–5 days from outside Vietnam. The cleaner approach for a Bavet loop is to apply for the Vietnam multi-entry eVisa ($50 USD (~$76 AUD), 90 days, multiple entries) at the start of the engagement so the Vietnam side is sorted for the whole project. Pair it with rolling Cambodia single-entry Business approvals and the visa stack works cleanly for the typical Aussie consulting cadence of three to four return trips home.

Is there any way to get a true multi-entry Cambodia visa?

Not in the eVisa stream as of June 2026. Cambodia does have an EB-class business visa with multiple-entry endorsement, but it is issued in-country at Phnom Penh's General Department of Immigration on the back of a sponsoring Cambodian entity (usually your client's local office) and runs through a separate paperwork track that takes two to three weeks to set up. For most Aussie consulting engagements under six months, rolling Business eVisas via the Bavet loop is faster and simpler than chasing the EB-class endorsement.

Cambodia Multi-Entry: the Bavet Vietnam Loop for Australian Consultants

Running a Cambodia engagement but flying home through Saigon? This is the Bavet loop for Aussie consultants on a Business eVisa — drive out through Moc Bai, sleep in District 1, and pick up a fresh Cambodia approval before the return crossing.

How does an Australian consultant run the Cambodia-Vietnam Bavet loop on a multi-entry workflow?

Treat each Cambodia entry as a separate single-entry Business eVisa: $90 USD (~$137 AUD) all-in, approved in 3–5 days, delivered as a printable PDF by email. Pair it with a Vietnam multi-entry eVisa so you can cross Bavet-Moc Bai as often as the engagement needs. The clean rhythm is fly into Phnom Penh KTI, complete your block of Cambodia client work, ride the 3.5-hour Mekong Express bus to Saigon for HCMC meetings or your direct flight home, then file a fresh Cambodia application from your Saigon hotel and re-enter overland 3–5 days later. The Cambodia e-Arrival Card is mandatory only for air arrivals into KTI, SAI, or KOS — land re-entry at Bavet is exempt.

Cambodia eVisas are single-entry in 2026. An Aussie consultant flying home via HCMC needs a fresh Business eVisa for every return into Cambodia — $90 USD (~$137 AUD) all-in, approved in 3–5 days.
The Phnom Penh-Bavet-Moc Bai drive runs about 3.5 hours by sleeper bus or private car. Most Aussies leave at 7am and clear both immigration posts before noon.
A Vietnam multi-entry eVisa is the missing piece. Pair it with rolling Cambodia single-entry approvals and you can bounce the corridor as often as your engagement needs.
Apply for the fresh Cambodia approval from a Saigon hotel desk on the morning after you cross. 3–5 days of HCMC client work or downtime, then the return Mekong Express run back to Phnom Penh.
Bavet land entries do not need the e-Arrival Card — that is air-only. But if you fly back into Phnom Penh KTI later in the engagement, the verified e-Arrival is $20 USD (~$31 AUD) and submits in the 7-day window before the flight.

Why the Bavet loop is the default 2026 Aussie consultant route

If you fly between Australia and Cambodia for paid work, you have probably already noticed the flight maths. Phnom Penh KTI has two reliable direct Aussie connections: a Sydney-Singapore-Phnom Penh routing on partner carriers and a Bangkok-Phnom Penh hop with everything that implies for connecting times. Saigon Tan Son Nhat, by contrast, has direct daytime flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. For a consultant on a four-month Cambodia engagement with three or four return trips home, flying through HCMC is not just convenient — it is faster, cheaper, and easier on the body clock.

The catch is that the Cambodia Business eVisa is a single-entry document. Every time you re-enter Cambodia overland from Vietnam, you need a fresh approval issued from outside the country. The Cambodia Business eVisa for Australians pillar covers the broader work-purpose framing, but the practical implication for a Bavet loop is that you are essentially running rolling three-business-day approvals between trips, each one filed from a Saigon hotel desk in the two-day window between Cambodia exits and re-entries.

This is the field-tested playbook for that rhythm. Which bus operators run the Phnom Penh-Saigon corridor cleanly in 2026, how the Bavet-Moc Bai booth handles a returning Australian on a freshly-issued Business approval, how to time the second and third application from a District 1 hotel, and the half-dozen small mistakes that turn a smooth corridor day into a six-hour border headache. The corridor itself has not changed much since the Mekong Express buses started running again post-pandemic; the visa policy around it has, and that is what trips most Aussie consultants up on the second pass.

The Phnom Penh-Bavet-Moc Bai-Saigon corridor in 2026

Geographically, this is a sealed two-lane National Highway 1 from central Phnom Penh to the Bavet International Border Gate, then Vietnam's QL22 from Moc Bai down to Tan Son Nhat. End to end it is roughly 230 km. Most Aussie consultants run it in one of three ways: a Mekong Express or Giant Ibis sleeper bus on a 6.5 to 7-hour scheduled service, a private car arranged through a Phnom Penh fixer at around $180 USD (~$275 AUD) door to door, or — for the fastest version — a private car to Bavet, walk across, and a separate car booked on the Vietnamese side to clear the corridor in under five hours.

Why use the Bavet loop instead of flying direct between Australia and Phnom Penh?

Saigon Tan Son Nhat has direct daytime flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. Phnom Penh KTI does not. For an Aussie consultant flying home three or four times across a four-month Cambodia engagement, routing through HCMC saves a connection each way, halves the body-clock disruption, and usually comes in cheaper. The 3.5-hour Bavet overland leg is essentially the airport transfer in this model — the corridor itself is sealed two-lane National Highway 1 with hourly Mekong Express buses.

Can I apply for the return Cambodia eVisa from inside Cambodia before I cross?

No. The Cambodia eVisa portal will not approve an application filed by someone with an active Cambodian entry stamp. You must be physically outside Cambodia at the time of submission. The clean workflow is exit Cambodia at Bavet, check into your Saigon hotel that afternoon, and file the new application the next morning. 3–5 days later the approval arrives in your inbox, delivered as a printable PDF by email, and you can book the return bus.

Do I need the Business eVisa or is the Tourist enough?

Aussie consultants doing paid client work in Cambodia need the Business eVisa, not Tourist. The Business approval covers meetings, paid work, conferences, sales calls, supplier visits, due-diligence, long stays, and sponsored events. The Tourist approval explicitly does not cover paid work, and presenting Tourist credentials with a laptop and client deck at the booth is the kind of mismatch that has triggered secondary interviews in the past. Pay the extra $10 USD (~$15 AUD) for Business and stay clean.

Does the Cambodia e-Arrival Card apply at Bavet?

No. The Cambodia e-Arrival Card is mandatory for air arrivals only — Phnom Penh KTI, Siem Reap SAI, and Sihanoukville KOS. Land crossings at Bavet are exempt. If a later leg of your engagement involves flying back into Cambodia from Singapore or Bangkok, the verified e-Arrival is $20 USD (~$31 AUD), submitted in the 7-day window before that flight. But the standard Bavet bus return does not need it.

How do I time the return application around Cambodian public holidays?

3–5 days excludes Cambodian public holidays, which can stretch a typical approval window to five or six calendar days during Khmer New Year (mid-April), Pchum Ben (late September or early October), King's Birthday (mid-May), and a handful of other observances. The rule of thumb is to file the return application at least seven days before your intended re-entry, which absorbs any holiday slowdown without forcing a rebook on the Mekong Express seat. Aussie-timezone support means you can check status during your day-time hours back home or in Saigon.

Pairing Cambodia single-entry with Vietnam multi-entry

The visa stack for a Bavet loop has two pieces. On the Vietnamese side, the multi-entry Vietnam eVisa (90 days, $50 USD (~$76 AUD)) is the workhorse. You apply once at the start of the engagement and you can re-enter Vietnam as many times as you need over the three months without filing again. On the Cambodian side, you run rolling single-entry Business eVisas: one for the first entry, one for each re-entry. The cluster overview on Cambodia eVisa multiple-entry rules has the wider 2026 policy picture, but the headline is that Cambodia has no multi-entry eVisa for Australians and every land re-entry consumes a fresh approval.

The cost maths is straightforward. Three return trips home over a four-month engagement means four Cambodia entries: the initial one and three re-entries. Four Business approvals at $90 USD (~$137 AUD) each is $360 USD (~$548 AUD) on the Cambodia side. Add the $50 USD (~$76 AUD) Vietnam multi-entry once and the visa stack for the whole engagement is around $410 USD (~$624 AUD). Spread across roughly 90 billable days, that is under $5 USD (~$7.50 AUD) a day, and it is recoverable on most consulting day rates as a project expense.

Tourist versus Business is the other call. Aussie consultants doing paid work in Cambodia need the Business eVisa, not Tourist. The Business approval covers meetings, paid client work, conferences, supplier visits, due-diligence, sales calls, and sponsored events. If your engagement is structured as a single long stay it can also be extended in-country at Phnom Penh's General Department of Immigration for $290-$340 USD (~$441-$517 AUD) — but for a Bavet loop with rolling exits and re-entries, you do not need the extension because each new entry starts a fresh 30-day clock on a freshly-issued approval.

The frequent-traveller pattern

If you expect more than three return trips home in a single engagement, the frequent-traveller visa strategy for Aussies has the wider planning framework — including when an EB-class Cambodian work permit (a separate process) starts to make more financial sense than rolling Business eVisas.

Applying for the return Cambodia eVisa from a Saigon hotel

The single rule that catches Aussie consultants on the second application is the physical-location requirement. The Cambodia eVisa must be applied for from outside Cambodia — you cannot file the return one from your last Phnom Penh hotel night. The clean workflow is exit Cambodia at Bavet on day five of your back-home swing, check into your District 1 hotel that afternoon, and file the new application on a laptop the next morning. 3–5 days later it arrives in your inbox, delivered as a printable PDF by email. The Australian application walkthrough takes you through the form field by field.

Most Aussie consultants on the loop apply from the desk of their HCMC hotel — Park Hyatt, Sofitel Plaza, Renaissance Riverside, and any of the District 1 boutique hotels along Dong Khoi all have stable wifi suitable for the application. Avoid mobile hotspot or hotel-lobby wifi during the photo upload step; the portal occasionally times out on flaky connections and forces you to re-enter the form. The fields that change between the first and second application are the entry date (your return Bavet date, not your original KTI arrival) and the port of entry (Bavet International rather than Phnom Penh airport).

The seven-day rule of thumb still applies: file the return application at least seven days before your intended re-entry. 3–5 days is the headline turnaround and approval lands as a printable PDF by email. Business days exclude Cambodian public holidays, which is the trap during Khmer New Year in April or Pchum Ben in September-October. Free resubmission if Immigration flags a correction is built into the all-in price, so the rare second-pass approval still lands inside the window. The Cambodia eVisa for Australians page has the full all-in fee breakdown.

Practical tip from the desk: use the same passport photo across all your rolling applications, but file each application fresh — the portal does not have a returning-applicant fast lane in 2026, and trying to copy data across browser tabs has introduced typos at the passport-number field more than once on our watch. Type the bio data from the passport itself, not from a previous PDF. Aussie-timezone support means you can email through to the desk during business hours Sydney/Melbourne if anything looks off on the approval.

Three mistakes Aussie consultants make on the Bavet loop

After running the desk for several hundred returning Aussies through this corridor in the last year, three mistakes account for most of the bad days. All three are avoidable with a few minutes of forward planning before you leave Phnom Penh on the first outbound leg.

Applying for the return eVisa from inside Cambodia. The portal does not always block applications filed from a Phnom Penh IP, but the approval refuses to issue if an active Cambodian entry stamp shows on your passport. Wait until you are physically in Saigon, then file. Trying to get ahead by 36 hours before you cross out costs more time than it saves.

Underestimating Cambodian public holidays. 3–5 days excludes Khmer New Year (mid-April), Pchum Ben (late September or early October depending on the year), King's Birthday (mid-May), and a handful of other observances. Aussie consultants applying for a return approval the Friday before a Cambodian holiday often see their approval land a week later than expected. Build a seven-day buffer and align Saigon downtime around it.

Booking the return bus before the approval lands. The Cambodia approval is essentially deterministic at the all-in $90 USD (~$137 AUD), but it is not instantaneous. Aussies who book Mekong Express for the day of expected approval sometimes end up rebooking when the email arrives 36 hours later than the headline timeline suggested. Wait for the PDF in your inbox, then book the bus seat — the bus is rarely full mid-week and same-day booking is fine.
